Everyone loves sugar. It tastes really good and we as human beings crave sugar right down to our DNAs.
Did you know that Americans, on an average, consume about 765 grams of sugar every five days?
To put it in simpler terms, that would be equal to consuming around 17 cans of soda. Can you believe that?
Well, it is a pretty big number but not many of us take that seriously. It is not a dangerous substance and hence small treats of sugar consumption here and there are seldom even noticed. But the fact is that, these small signs of consumption can actually lead to the chances of a full-blown sugar addiction.
Because sugar is actually a lot more addictive than certain hard drugs, say cocaine!
Do I have your attention yet?
Well here are 3 signs that you’re eating a lot of sugar. Check for yourselves and see what you can do about it.
Sugar cravings are pretty much round the clock
This is one of the most evident and obvious signs of a sugar addiction. You find yourself craving for sweets or other kinds of sugar almost all the time and it is more of a mental trigger. For example, if you see a chocolate cake or any other sweet somewhere and you can’t get it out of your mind and finally you end up buying it.
As a remedy you can choose to eat a more natural alternative instead during such times, like fresh fruits.
Sugar withdrawal is a thing
Just like drugs, if cutting down on sugar intake causes major issues in terms of withdrawal symptoms, then you have a problem. Some of these issues include food cravings even when you’re feeling full, anxiety, depression, mood swings etc.
A significant cut down on sugar from the amounts you otherwise normally consume can also cause a significant reduction in dopamine in your system, which will leave you feeling tired as well.
To combat these, you can try getting some more hours of sleep and also try and fill the gap of sugar with other healthier food.
Salty food cravings as well
The thing with our human body is that it has to always be balanced. Hence if you constantly intake sugar, you will also feel the need to consumer salty food or meat in order to feel balanced.
The remedy though, surprisingly, is not to eat a lot of salty foods as your body tells you to like chips and other snacks. Instead, what you can do is to add slightly sweet vegetables like yams, or carrots to your meals or food routines.
So those were the signs and also what you can do to keep sugar consumption in check. Even though some of them might sound a little hard to do, trust me, you can do it.
