Everyone talks about how we should be focused on our goals in life and how we should be constantly working towards it. We also hear a lot about the importance of being ambitious in life.
But there are a lot of people who simply follow suit, just because of the fact that that is what they are advised to do from a very young age. And as children, if the only thing you hear growing up, is that you need to set some goals in life and somehow achieve them, you naturally tend to do what is being told blindly, because that is what you are programmed to do.
However, this is not exactly the right way to go about and succeed in life.
You can be ambitious, but you need to have some clearly defined goals to start off with. For the same reason, being told to set life goals when you’re a child is not quite practical, because you obviously have no idea what life is even at that point of time, let alone know what you want to do in life.
Without having proper clear cut goals in life to focus on, you cannot really work on them either. You can work and work hard every single day, but without clearly knowing what exactly you are going for, you can get lost.
Or sometimes, you may know what you want to achieve exactly, but you may not know how to get there. Again, complete success gets hindered.
What you can do about it
One of the biggest mistakes that people do in terms of career goals is “settling”.
That is, people often do certain things because the society or their family expects them to do it and end up living their lives the same way. This can lead to extreme monotony, an acute lack of any sort of determination and dissatisfaction in life and ultimately an unhappy life.
If you want a successful life, and by successful, I mean, one in which you get to live your life the way you want, get to choose the exact career you want etc. you need to stop doing “duties and tasks” and literally “live” the life that you desire.
In other words, stop settling for a job that isn’t what you really want, just because the pay check is good. Stop settling for a course in college that you genuinely are not interested in, just because that is what your family or society expects you to learn.
Only make decisions that make you genuinely happy and be determined as a rock.
The second thing you need to focus on is having well-defined goals in life. And I don’t just mean knowing what industry you want to work in or what subjects you are interested in.
You need to know what your field of interest is, do thorough research on the opportunities and roles that you can go for in the field, figure out exactly what kind of a job you want to be doing in the industry, know what your strengths and weaknesses are work towards them. You also need to work out a step by step plan of what you can do to achieve your goals, and mind you, let it be baby steps.
Even though, these may sound too cliché or too basic in terms of career advice, these are two very important aspects of life decisions, that most people forget or overlook. I cannot stress these points enough. So be sure to work out your goals and action plan today itself.
