8 Tips to Practice Proper Hygiene When You’re At The Gym

Living a healthy lifestyle is key to enjoy a good and balanced life. This is why there are plenty of people who choose to go to the gym regularly so they can spend a good hour or two exercising. What people don’t realize, however, is that the gym can also be one of the dirtiest places in the world. Just imagine all that sweat falling around, sometimes even including saliva when someone carries a heavy item. Because of this, it’s important to remember to choose a gym that regularly cleans and disinfects its equipment.

If you are in the process of choosing a gym to attend, here are some of the things you should remember to do whenever you work out:

Wash your hands after using weights

After a good workout, it’s normal for people to sweat a lot. And most of the time, you no longer know where your sweat could be dropping to. This is the same with every other gym member. Since this is something very normal and cannot be controlled, you should remember to wash your hands after you used dumbbells so you can get rid of germs.

Clean surface before sitting down

Apart from washing your hands after using a gym equipment, you should also remember to clean the equipment before you sit down. Even though the weight bench may look clean, your untrained eye would not be able to spot the germs and sweat that are already there. This is a good practice so you can get rid of the germs that may infect your skin when you sit down on the equipment.

Wash your water bottle regularly

It’s good to know that you bring around your own water bottle instead of using a plastic bottle. But can you still recall the last time you cleaned it? Remember to wash your water bottle after each use so you can get rid of bacteria that could be thriving there already.

Clean your own headphones

It’s also important that you clean your headphones after you use them. This is because your sweat could drop into your headphones and could lead to making your ears waxier than usual. To help you clean your headphones, you simply need to use a cotton swab to remove the dirt from the small material.

Wear gloves when you lift

When you lift weights, you are exposing your hands to calluses and small tears. This is why you should protect your hands by wearing gloves. Apart from this, your gloves can help stop dirt and germs from getting into your skin and causing an infection.

Clean your yoga mat before use

People typically pick up a rolled up yoga mat so they can attend a class without thinking if it’s clean or not. Sadly, what many fail to realize is that after using a yoga mat, people tend to just roll them back up and leave them in the corner. If you are planning to do some yoga exercises, remember to bring a paper towel and cleaning solution to wipe some of the dirt away from the mat.

Always shower after you workout

Remember to shower after you workout so you can avoid getting infected from all the germs flying around in the gym. It only takes one hour for staph to colonize throughout your skin. And since this is a commonly found bacteria in gyms, you should do your best to follow proper hygiene.

Wear shoes all the time

While you’re taking a shower, remember to wear flip flops to protect your sole from the dirty gym floor. Otherwise, this could potentially put you at risk for Athlete’s foot.

No matter how clean your gym may look like, it is not always a guarantee that you won’t find any bacteria there. By following these tips, you can protect yourself from the germs that can be found in your local gym.
