Can you imagine a slightly, well actually a lot different looking Hannah Baker on 13 Reasons Why?
I for one cannot, because Katherine Langford’s portrayal of the challenging character of an insecure woman is just out of this world.
The role though, was not offered to her initially. The original adaptation of the series on Netflix was completely different from the one we see now. Hannah Baker was supposed to be played by another equally talented actress – Selena Gomez.
That’s right. Back in 2011, it was reported that Selena Gomez would be starring in the series and her mom Mandy Teefey would be the executive producer. It was the time when Selena was known for her work in Wizards of Waverly Place and who could forget the movie Monte Carlo where she was joined by Leighton Meester and Cory Monteith. She was also gaining popularity with her music as Selena Gomez and The Scene.
Meanwhile, Katherine was an unknown Australian actress then.
Speaking of a completely different scenario, did you also know that 13 Reasons Why was initially not conceived as a series for Netflix?
It was intended to be a movie for Universal Pictures actually.
But obviously, after so many years now, the project has shaped up differently.
Now, what role does Selena play in the project?
She works behind the cameras now with her mom as the executive producer of the show.
She also feels that she can see herself as Hannah though.
Selena told THR, “Seven years ago I did and even more so today, which I think is funny because it’s backwards. The older I get the more insecure I get, which is odd. But that’s something a lot of people can relate to. Her personality is a quiet strength. I’ve never really been the one to be in anyone’s face. A lot of girls feel like they have to be a certain way for attention. Social media has amplified all of that. I get that she didn’t want to be what her life was.”
You’d think that considering how Selena feels that she would have been apt for the part of Hannah, she probably isn’t completely happy with the fact that it is handled by Katherine now. But the truth is, despite being able to connect to the role in such a personal way, she is happy to have given the chance to another actress.
She explained to THR, “A book is frightening for me because I know the cult following it has, which is the reason why I didn’t want to be in it.”
Now in case you are lost there, 13 Reasons Why is based on the novel of the same name written by Jay Asher. And it is adapted by Brian Yorkey for Netflix.
I guess we are all thankful and happy for the twist that happened behind the scenes of the show, because otherwise Selena wouldn’t have ventured into production and Katherine wouldn’t have been able to show her acting skills either.
